No. 79

No 79 / The Stranger
Watercolor, 5" x 7"  (less .6" border)

TGIF!! This Friday couldn't have come any sooner. My fiancĂ© is coming to town this weekend and I am ready for some rest and relaxation. How about you?

Full Disclosure Friday—today I used one of my 'get out of jail free' cards. There was no possible way I was getting a painting done for today's post. This one I did 2014. It is of Sam Elliott as "The Stranger" in The Big Lebowski. Seriously, who doesn't love a little Sam Elliott? You forgive me, right? I thought you might.

Have an awesome Friday!

No. 78

No. 78 / M. Gustave
Watercolor, Paper size 5" x 7" (less border .6")

Now, I am just having fun. I love The Grand Budapest Hotel for all its vibrant colors and quirky characters. I just couldn't help myself from indulging in some more characters. I apologize this photo is not better. I finished it last night and took the photo in unfavorable light. (A better photo will be posted to my Facebook & Blogger later today.)

No. 74

No. 74 / Walter Mitty
Watercolor, Paper size 5" x 7" (less border .6")

"Life is about courage and going into the unknown."

This isn't a classic movie. It's not from the 80s. And, to my knowledge, it didn't get a lot of box office fanfare. In my heart it is a classic, however. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is all about breaking the barriers. Maybe those are barriers you've set for yourself, or those imposed on you by  someone else. It's about being brave and just "going for it." Waiting until the end is not an option.

No. 70

No. 70 / Duckie
Watercolor, Paper size 5" x 7" (less border .6")

I once was told by a painting professor that most art majors no longer create artwork five years after graduating college (that was ten years ago). I often think of this and use it for motivation.  It makes me glad I am still creating work. This project forces me to paint every day, and I hope the process makes me a better artist. I think it helps me let go, to a degree. If something isn't good I just have to l move on. I can't lament failure (or be crippled by it). Tomorrow will be a new painting. A new victory. A new opportunity.

Today's painting marks number 70 of these opportunities. This is Duckie from the teenage angst classic Pretty in Pink. It was fun to step back into a time filled to funky outfits and pre-mullet hair. (I admit, I think James Spader's hair is pretty fabulous in this movie!)

No. 69

No. 69 / Captain Koons
Watercolor, Paper size 5" x 7" (less border .6")

I have to chuckle because the longer I look at this painting the more it makes me think of ET. It's actually Christopher Walken from a scene in Pulp Fiction. He is one of my favorite actors for his unique, eccentric characters. He's a pretty good dancer, too.

No. 63

No 63 / Raleigh St. Clair
Original Watercolor, 5" x 7"  (with .6" border)
Price: $63.00 plus tax and shipping ($2.30) for List Members

I have actually considered doing a whole series on Bill Murray. Really. His characters are always so vivid and fun. He is a Wes Anderson alumnus; in this painting his character is Raleigh St. Clair in The Royal Tenenbaums. What is your favorite Bill Murray character?

No. 62

No 62 / Miss Mona (aka Dolly)

Watercolor, 9" x 12"  (Image 5.25" x 8.25")
Price: $62.00 plus tax and shipping ($2.30)

The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas isn't exactly what is considered a cult classic. It did boast a classic 80s cast with Burt Reynolds, Dolly Parton, and Dom Deluise. At some point in my youth I watched this movie and really liked it. I chalk it up to all the singing and dancing. Now, I like it for the nostalgia. This was a time before cell phones, the internet, and Dolly's transformative plastic surgeries. Big hair, cowboy boots, and goofy comedy were par for the course. Do you have a favorite movie or movie star from this era?

No. 61 / Margot
Watercolor, Paper size 9" x 12" (Image 5.25" x 8.25")
Price: $61.00 plus tax and shipping ($2.30)

Happy Monday!

For those of you who are Wes Anderson fans you will recognize this lady. It is tragically depressed Margot Tenenbaum from the movie
The Royal Tenenbaums. This one was fun to paint. I am looking forward to more of these!

The Dude

I forgot to post this piece here this week. A couple weeks ago I got some DVDs of some fun and favorite flicks. The Big Lebowski was one of them. Jeff Bridges is one of my favorite actors. He's a multi-threat in my eyes; he's an actor, an artist, an activist, a musician . . . I decided to paint "the DUDE" as my ode to his awesomeness.
