No. 114 / Bowl of Fruit
Original PanPastel — Image Size 9" x 6" (paper size 12" x 9")

As my mom would say, "We're off like a herd of turtles!" By the time you read this I will be starting my journey to Kauai. I am officially on vacation (and two days away from the big "I do").  Please note May will be the month of Tropical. (It seemed appropriate considering our destination.)

Have an awesome week!

Original PanPastel — Image Size 9" x 6" (paper size 12" x 9")
Price: $113.00 plus tax and shipping ($2.30)

The one thing I love about these Pan Pastels is that they save me a tremendous amount of time! I can't even believe it! The best feeling is to be able to start a painting and finish it before I go to work. I might survive this year after all. :)

No. 112 / Avocado Fresh
Original PanPastel — Image Size 9" x 6" (paper size 12" x 9")

When you think of Hawaiian cuisine things that come to mind are  poi, seafood, coconuts, or pineapples. I think of avocados. When I went to Maui five years ago I discovered I could get avocados everywhere. It beat out pineapples every time. I love them so much I devoted a painting to them. Can you tell I am getting excited for my trip?

More explorations playing with the Pan Pastels. I was in Aaron Bros this week looking for a frame and realized they had art supplies! Who knew? They appear to be the only game in town that actually carries Pan Pastels. In case you wanted to get a set of your own . . .

Eggs are kind of fascinating to paint. I don't know how to explain it, but I get a real satisfaction out of it. The best part is I get to eat them when I am done!

Today was an exercise in "letting go." I get wrapped up in the little details of painting often and my work becomes too tight. While exploring these pan pastels I'm finding it easier to work looser. What do you think?

Oh, Spring is surely coming,
Her couriers fill the air;
Each morn are new arrivals,
Each night her ways prepare;
I scent her fragrant garments,
Her foot is on the stair.

No. 101 / Phyllis

Original PanPastel — Image Size 8.25" x 5.25" (paper size 12" x 9")

Happy Caturday! Cats, dogs, goats . . . I love them all. I have never outgrown my love for animals. You might say I am a bit of a cat lady. This feline in particular holds a real soft spot in my heart. She is named Phyllis (after Phyllis Diller). She is generally disheveled and can be found at our office door every morning. When she sees my car in the mornings she comes running to greet me. Sometimes she will even accompany me along the canal sending me off on my daily lunchtime walk. Often she can be found napping on the hood of my car. (I think she believes I am her mother/master.)

I am going to hate to leave her when I go to Montana. It's funny how attached we become to our little animal companions, how we assign human qualities to them. They can bring real comfort to us when we need it, and I believe our lives are enriched by their presence. I haven't done many animal paintings, but I thought 'ol Phyllis deserved a place in internet history.

Hug your animals today!

No. 100 / Music to My Ears
Watercolor, 9” x 12” (Image 5.25" x 8.25")

Today is day 100! Can you believe it?! One hundred little paintings, one hundred little emails . . . I am 27% of the way there. It doesn't sound far, but it feels like a real milestone. In the next 100 days I will be married and moved to a new state!

In celebration of this fact, today we are having a little dance party (imagined or real—you decide). Feel free  to use my handy record player or bluetooth radio (see below) to get you started.

Have an awesome Friday!

No. 91 / Red
Original Watercolor/Pan Pastel, image size 5.25" x 8.25" (paper size 9" x 12")

I am excited to note that Kat L. is the winner of the quarterly portrait! I will share her painting when I have it complete. You, my faithful subscribers, will have another chance to win in July.

April is the month of MAGNIFIED. I will take items and blow them up, so to speak. Paintings will be a bit more abstract, and it will definitely push my limits. I am looking forward to it! Nothing worth doing comes easy, right?

This brings me to today's painting. My mother had a knack for creating beautiful, wispy flowers, but they haven't been my strength. I tried my hand at a beautiful tulip I found in my yard. Don't you just love tulips?

No. 90

No. 90 / Napoleon
Watercolor/Pan Pastel, image size 5.25" x 8.25" (paper size 9" x 12")

The Cult of Portraiture list would not be complete without my  bobble-headed rendition of Napoleon Dynamite. I used Pan Pastel with my watercolors for this one and am excited to use it more. It blends beautifully.

It's hard to believe March is coming to a close so soon, but I am looking forward to April's theme of MAGNIFIED. And, it will be a big month as I am getting married!

Tonight will be the drawing for a free portrait for a lucky list member. Stay tuned for more details . . .
