No. 314

No. 314 / Shells

If you look up the symbolism of shells you get a lot of answers. They are said to symbolize emotion and movement of the unconscious (New Age spirituality); longevity, fertility, and peace (Polynesian culture); and Pilgrams (Chrisianity).

For me, they make me think of travel and my mom. The shells pictured are from a trip I took to Maui. But I vividly remember walking along Wrightsville Beach (NC), during Christmas time, collecting shells with my mom. My brother and his family had flown us out for the Holidays while he was living there. It actually was a surprise for Mom. He had flown me out separately (and secretly) to surprise her. She had been bummed I wasn't able to join them and was seriously excited when I arrived on his doorstep. It really is one of my favorite holiday memories. And, as I am unpacking I think of her daily, wishing she was here. She would be so happy to see how life has unfolded the last couple years in her absence.
