Kathy was one of my mom's dearest friends from Coeur d'Alene. Athol, specifically. She had been one of my mom's tole painting students. They had that kind of kindred friendship that never changed over the years; if they hadn't seen each other for ten years, when they got together it was like nothing had changed.

In the summer, as a kid, I would spend a week with her and her husband, Wally. They lived in the country, had two horses, five dogs, a goat, rabbits, and cats. In the mornings, before chores, I would eat cold cereal. After chores, I would eat "second breakfast" with Wally. I loved it.

Kathy loved kids. And me. And Mom. This is one of those gifts she gave Mom on one of their visits, which I inherited. It makes me smile. It's not what you have in life—it's WHO you have in life.
