Painting is like a muscle. The more you do it, the better you become. (Well, hopefully!) Sometimes I need to get 'warmed up' to move forward on bigger projects. I don't know if this happens to other artists or not, but it seems to work for me. I have a tendency to overwork projects and I love the loose feel of watercolors when they are fresh. I decided I needed to practice, so I used this photo from the great interweb for practice. Yep, it isn't my mash up of a portrait (my usual technique. It is a still from the Grand Budapest Hotel of Adrian Brody (he makes a fabulous villain). He has an unusually large ear in my version, but I found it fun to paint anyhow.
The moral of the story? Don't give up. Practice. Work your technique. No one lost 50 pounds in one day, and no one ever became a master painter in one day. Patience, tenacity, and perseverance are what take you on a journey.
And who doesn't love Adrian Brody?
